Clearly Brian Sabean is bringing back a win now attitude to San Francisco. This signing comes a day after the Giants' GM signed Bob Howry to a one year deal. And, back in November, Sabean also signed middle reliever Jeremy Affeldt, formerly of the Cincinnati Reds, to a two year deal. Hopefully, this is just the beginning. The Giants are expected to make a run at Orlando Hudson and C.C. Sabathia. The probability of the Giants signing Hudson is a lot greater than signing Sabathia. But, there are rumblings out of San Francisco that the Giants are preparing an offer that may exceed that of the Milwaukee Brewers' offer. And, Sabathia, a native Californian, may feel a connection to his home state and decide to sign with the Giants. If the Giants were to sign Hudson and Sabathia, that would immediately turn them into a World Series contender.
Hopefully Brian Sabean has put the Barry Zito disaster behind him and is ready to make a splash again in the free agent market. He is off to a good start with Affeldt, Howry, and Renteria, but needs to add a solid starting pitcher and a second baseman, and maybe a outfielder if the price is right. If he can do these things then the Giants have a solid shot at returning to contention in 2009.
